At the design talks organized at NeoCon, pba introduced the Research conducted by the University of Venice IUAV, aimed at exploring the perception of inclusion and sustainability regarding TOCCO.
On<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>June 10th and 11th\u00a0<\/span><\/b>at NeoCon,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>pba<\/b>\u00a0<\/span>and<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Kay Sargent<\/b>\u00a0discussed about products role in Sustainability and Inclusion with<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Aquafil\u00a0<\/span><\/b>and<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>experts<\/b>\u00a0sparking meaningful conversations on circular economy and inclusive design.<\/span><\/p>\n

The panel of experts explored the collaborative efforts between\u00a0<\/span>producers and designers<\/b>\u00a0to create products that champion both\u00a0<\/span>inclusivity and sustainability<\/b>, envisioning a future where innovation aligns seamlessly with positive societal impact.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
pba CEO,\u00a0<\/span>Erica Anesi<\/b>, with a focus on our products, shared\u00a0insights into how TOCCO has redefined inclusivity in\u00a0<\/span>product design<\/b>, paving the way for more accessible and equitable solutions. Erica also introduced\u00a0<\/span>research\u00a0<\/span><\/b>conducted by the\u00a0<\/span>University of Venice IUAV<\/b>, commissioned from pba and Aquafil, and explained how the role of perception becomes crucial when considering objects within a space.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
Maria Giovanna Sandrini<\/b>, Chief Communication Officer, Aquafil Group introduced the concept of\u00a0<\/span>sustainable design<\/b>\u00a0and why this is important to Aquafil and she shared what Aquafil and pba are doing together to address inclusive and sustainable design.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
pba and Aquafil commissioned this research at IUAV University’s\u00a0<\/span>Department of Psychology of Architecture<\/b>\u00a0with the aim of exploring how inclusivity and sustainability are perceived by both experts and naives, and identifying which perceptual\u00a0<\/span>components<\/b>\u00a0effectively\u00a0<\/span>communicate inclusivity or sustainability<\/b>\u00a0to them.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
The research investigated varied components of inclusivity and sustainability with the scope to classify them into single\u00a0<\/span>measurable variables<\/b>\u00a0(e.g. hard\/soft \u2013 warm\/cold), with unique meanings (the diverse concepts that underlie inclusive\/sustainable artefacts). These single variables were used to investigate their related\u00a0<\/span>tertiary-expressive quality<\/b>\u00a0which influence the\u00a0<\/span>perception<\/b>\u00a0of inclusion and sustainability.
The\u00a0<\/span>research scope<\/b>\u00a0was to find a\u00a0<\/span>correlation<\/b>\u00a0<\/span>between the single components of\u00a0<\/span>perceived inclusivity\/sustainability\u00a0<\/span><\/b>and the\u00a0<\/span>tertiary-expressive qualities<\/b>, to verify which categories of inclusivity\/sustainability are overlooked and how.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
Finally, the\u00a0<\/span>perception of inclusive\/sustainable artefacts<\/b>\u00a0were assessed by collecting empirical data on which components of an artifact express inclusivity and sustainability and the reasons behind these perceptions.<\/p>\n

On the first panel discussion \u201cExploring the Intersection of Sustainable & Inclusive Design\u201d,\u00a0<\/span>Kay Sargent<\/b>, Senior Principal & Director of Thought Leadership, Interiors, HOK, explored how\u00a0<\/span>spaces\u00a0<\/span><\/b>can be designed to\u00a0<\/span>support all individuals<\/b>, fostering inclusivity and accessibility.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
The panel speaker\u00a0<\/span>Preethi Gopinath,\u00a0<\/span><\/b>Director, MFA Textiles & Associate Professor at Parsons School of Design – The New School, explored how sustainability and inclusivity are essential components of training for the\u00a0<\/span>next generation of designers<\/b>, along with gathering insights on\u00a0<\/span>students’ perspectives<\/b>\u00a0regarding these crucial values.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
On the second design talk \u201cWhat Does Responsible Design Mean?\u201d, the amazing lineup of speakers included\u00a0<\/span>Julie Gauthier<\/b>, Practice Leader, Workplace Interiors, Associate Principal of Perkins & Will that recently launched their Neurodiversity Assessment Toolkit focused on\u00a0<\/span>workplace environments<\/b>. Julie explored the role of designers to raise\u00a0<\/span>awareness of sustainable and inclusive choices<\/b>\u00a0with a focus on products specified on projects that support sustainable and wellbeing goals.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
Our experience at NeoCon week were a success. Participants loved browsing our products while pba introduced the research conducted by the University of Venice IUAV, engaging in the interesting panel discussion, networking, and enjoying a drink.<\/div>\n
